Who and What are Historians - The Donald Ross Society Historian Network
You might be asking yourself “gee, do I qualify as a club historian?” Well, there are some clubs that have historian as a formal position, but our experience indicates that most clubs just have a person that has sort of assumed this role. It might be a person who has aided in writing the club’s history, someone that is the custodian of club records, or someone that shows up at the club to take photos of club events. It might be a person that has helped research the club or course in connection with a restoration.
In all these cases, you are the type of person who’s participation is welcome.
Clubs are not restricted to a single participant. If there is more than one individual involved in your club’s history, all are welcome.
Purpose and Goals
The purpose of the Historian Network is not all that complicated. Club historians are concerned with the goal of historic preservation at the club level, something the Society thought should be encouraged and assisted. The idea was to create a data base of articles and information that could be maintained on the Society’s website that any historian could access. Articles might include anything from how to find club artifacts, to how to find old aerial photos, to ideas for celebrating your club anniversary, to best practices in storing records. There is a wealth of topics and ideas that could be shared. In addition to technical assistance, the Society was hoping to have a social component as well. A directory of other historians would be available so that historians could communicate directly, historians would be profiled with photographs of how they display history, and the Society would sponsor occasional forums where historians could meet and discuss topics.
The Society believes that golf club historians play a vital role, so much so that participation is open to all golf historians and that participation is free of cost. A historian does not need to be a member of the Society to participate.
