"Over the first two days, we enjoyed a survey course in classic golf course architecture, spanning from the Golden Age to the modern-minimalist era that the Golden Age inspired. More specifically, we started out at Pine Needles, where we got schooled in the subtleties of Donald Ross"

"Few go so far in a golf course superintendent career without going anywhere than James Drinkard has done at Athens Country Club. Recently, Drinkard was honored as Superintendent of the Year by the Georgia GCSA, 45 years after he started at the same club earning $1.85 an hour. 'If you love what you’re doing and you love where you’re doing it, well, you’ve really got something,' he said of his time at the club, which is home to 27 holes designed by Donald Ross."

"A marriage of H.S. Colt and Donald Ross with a bunker restoration that brings elements of the heathlands to suburban Chicago. A Golden Age classic in every respect, one can only marvel at features like the double green 6th and 17th. Colt’s pulpit green locations and Ross’ construction savvy make this a unique addition to the U.S. Top 100.”

Re: Old Elm - "This North Side of Chicago club restricts itself to some 200 members, all of them men, many of them CEOs, a good handful of whom also belong to Augusta National. Get the picture?"
Re: Seminole - '“If I were a young man going on the pro tour, I’d try to make arrangements to get on Seminole,” Ben Hogan once said of this Donald Ross design. Sound advice. Then again, Hogan made a lot of things seem easier than they really are.'

Re: Interlachen - “Green also reintroduced Ross’s bunkering schemes, and many of the greens are now surrounded by short grass. Ross’s routing across ridge lines creates memorable and distinctive holes such as the par-3 5th, par-4 6th, par-4 10th, par-5 12th and par-4 13th.”
Re: Old Elm - “Harry Colt built Old Elm in 1913, in one of his rare North American visits. In the ensuing years, Donald Ross added his own touches, representing the only significant time these two design titans spent together.”

"Because the nature of course rating is so intensely subjective, no one opinion carries the day. The only way, then, to build meaningful consensus is to incorporate this diversity of panelists and experiences into one ranking."
"Twenty-four years ago, I barely knew who Donald Ross was,” [Rich Shilling] says. “And I didn’t know anything really about the history of this golf course. I was just focused on turf. Now, it’s about preserving the intent of the architect, the intent of Donald Ross, and bringing small details back into the golf course with the flagsticks and the tee markers and all of the furniture that is built by us. It’s special for me to be involved with preserving this place."
