DONALD ROSS SOCIETY FOUNDATION

The Donald Ross Society Foundation is a charitable organization and is a 501(c)(3) organization. Currently the Foundation has assets of over $170,000 in 2021. Donations to the Donald Ross Society Foundation are tax deductible.  The Foundation is funded by golf events organized by the Donald Ross Society and by contributions from individuals. Similar to the Society, the goals of the DRS Foundation are to commemorate the life and work of Donald Ross, educating the public as to his work, and promoting the preservation and restoration of the golf courses he designed.

It is planned to increase the size and scope of our grants next year - if you know of any deserving efforts, do let us know. More information on grant requests is available by CONTACTING US HERE.

2021 Grants

  • The Foundation donated to several organizations.  These were:

      • A $25,000 grant to the Tufts Archives in Pinehurst in November 2021 in support of their continuing efforts to collect and preserve the Ross records and provide access to those records to golf clubs, architects, historians, and the public.
      • A $15,000 grant to the municipal Mill Creek Golf Course in Boardman, Ohio in support of their continuing course improvements for their 36-hole Ross design.
  • 2020 Grants

The Foundation donated to many organizations. These were:

        • A grant of $25,000 to the Tufts Archives in Pinehurst in November 2020 in support of their efforts to preserve the records of Donald Ross.
        • A donation of $4,000 was also made to the Elk Rapids Golf Club in support of their efforts to continue tee improvements and tree removal for this Michigan 9-hole Ross course open to the public.
        • In addition, a grant of $15,000 was donated to the municipal Mill Creek Golf Course in support of their continued course improvements for their 36-hole Ross design.
        • Lastly, a grant of $15,000 was provided to the Dunedin Golf Club in Florida to assist in the master plan preparation for restoration of this municipal Ross course.

      2019 Grants

    • The Foundation donated to several organizations in 2019.  These were:

          • A grant of $20,000 to the Tufts Archives in Pinehurst in support of their efforts to collect, catalog, and preserve the records of Donald Ross.
          • A donation of $7,500 was provided to the Elk Rapids Golf Club in support of their efforts to improve tees, remove trees, and improve the grounds at their Ross course in Michigan.
          • A grant of $7,500 was donated to the municipal Mill Creek Golf Course in Boardman, Ohio in support of their course improvements for the 36-hole Ross design.

        2018 Grants

The Foundation made a donation in May of $6,000 to help Elk Rapids Golf Club in their efforts to restore the course to the plans of Ross.  The course was and remains a 9 hole gem constructed in the early 20s near the city of Elk Rapids, just northeast of Traverse City Michigan.   The early 20's course work was immediately impacted by financial straits and the bunkers shown on their Ross plan were never built.  Surviving over 96 years now, the club has now constructed the bunkers and is also expanding and improving their tees. So drop by on your travels and check out the 9 hole gem open to the public.  You can view a short video of the story by clicking on Elk Rapids GC Just a short time ago, the club's Ross plans were "re-found" in the Tufts Archives and acted upon.

        2017 Grants

In November 2017, the Foundation made a grant of $13,000 to the Tufts Archives in Pinehurst North Carolina. The Society membership continues to support, now for over 25 years, the Tufts Archives efforts to collect, preserve, and disseminate the records and drawings of Donald J. Ross.

        2016 Grants

In 2016, the Foundation made grants to two organizations:

A $5,000 donation to Operation Double Eagle (The Warrior Alliance, Inc.) in February 2016. The donation will support the work by this non-profit veterans’ organization at the Ross course in Warm Springs.

A $10,000 donation to the Tufts Archives in Pinehurst North Carolina in April 2016.

        Other Grants

In prior years the Foundation has supported the Friends of Bobby Jones Golf Course in its efforts to improve the municipal Bobby Jones Golf Course in Sarasota Florida; the fabulous Ross documentary produced by Society member Cob Carlson; bunker restoration at the Wilmington Municipal in Wilmington, North Carolina, and the local organization promoting the municipal George Wright Golf Course in Boston.

Since 1998 the Foundation and the Ross Society have donated over $ 220,000 in support of the Tufts Archives housed at the Given Memorial Library in Pinehurst. These donations help to continue the preservation and dissemination of original Ross documents that are vital resources for clubs that are pursuing restoration work.

        Future Grants

The Foundation’s activities and assets are used to commemorate the life and work of Donald J. Ross, educating the public as to his work, and promoting the preservation and restoration of the golf courses he designed. Accordingly the Foundation considers grant requests to organizations or individuals pursuing projects that are consistent with the Foundation’s mission.

One example would be working with municipal Ross courses, many of which are in dire need of attention. By funding an architectural review, we hope to arouse interest among the municipalities to restore the wonderful Ross works that they operate. We hope that we have the same effect as we did at Wilmington where a $7,000 donation spurred the City into investing $ 180,000 to restore the bunkers.

        Individual Contributions

While some income for the trust continues to be the distributions from the Donald Ross Society itself, individual contributions to the Foundation are essential to maintain this status. With this in mind the Donald Ross Society Foundation is calling for contributions. Additionally, when the Society holds a golf outing, a portion of the collected entry fee is set aside to build the Foundation Trust. For this reason, entry fees are made payable to the Foundation.  The Society usually has two to four gatherings and events a year in support of the Foundation.

With this in mind, we urge our members to contribute to our Foundation.

Please send your tax deductible donations payable to the  "Donald Ross Society Foundation" to:
